Elphius Flux

Elphius Flux is an upcycling business, specialising in industrial and modern furniture. Based in Chesterfield, Jason and Gwen Hopkinson create bespoke, custom-made furniture from salvaged and reclaimed materials.

The business started as a hobby and grew from there. For six months, the pair developed their skills whilst providing unique and functional furniture for family and friends. At this time, both Gwen and Jason were working full-time, but, as interest in their products grew, they were able to leave their jobs behind and concentrate on Elphius Flux fully.

Word of mouth and social media has allowed Elphius Flux to develop a large and loyal client base, and the operation has moved from a back garden shed to a large external workshop and unit. The name Elphius Flux makes reference to steampunk, a movement which the couple are deeply immersed in. The aesthetics and themes of steampunk invariably touch on historical stings, alongside anachronistic technology. This melding of the past and future is clear to see in Elphius Flux’s contemporary designs.

Their daughter, Tyler, worked alongside her parents for a time to help spread the word about the business, and they look to employ at least one apprentice and train them up to help expand the business further. Jason and Gwen received £4,000 each from The Start Up Loans Company in June, 2015. The finance allowed them to lay the foundations for Elphius Flux, whilst their mentor was able to provide a consistent and helpful level of support. They are currently working on a new website and are hoping to continue their steady and upward growth.
