Lorraine Phillips started her café in April 2016 after working as a nurse in the NHS for 25 years. She decided that it was time for a change and had always enjoyed cooking and dealing with the public so thought it would be a good idea.
She found an empty premises by the side of a busy road and applied for a change of use license and, once accepted, the mission to open the café began! Lorraine now works at the café full-time and employs 4 members of staff to help her.
Lorraine has seen the business grow in the short time it has been open, but is not aware what her expected turnover is likely to be yet. She has faced challenges as, although she enjoys dealing with the public, sometimes it can be very difficult. She didn’t realise how much work it was going to be and initially struggled with marketing and getting customers through the door. Now the business is going from strength-to-strength and Lorraine hopes to add an extension to the property in the future, to allow in increased seating area.
Lorraine was offered mentoring and is in the process of arranging it. She found her experience of securing a start up loan to be a good one.
