Sian Thomas took out a loan of £11,000 in December 2020 to set up Hipster Hamper, a company providing bespoke, curated hampers that are big on quality and taste. Based in Bermondsey’s creative hub, The Biscuit Factory, Hipster Hamper caters to customers nationwide online as well as through Deliveroo and JustEat.
A background working in hospitality gave founder Sian an opportunity to connect with exciting brands.
“I’d worked in hospitality since I was 16 years old. However, when the pandemic hit, I was unable to find work. I moved back home and spent all of my first night awake, wondering what to do. The name came first!
“I wanted to work with and supply the independents that I’d worked with in the past. With the industry suffering due to rolling lockdowns, I came up with the idea to bring the café/bar experience to people’s homes.”
Working with start-ups and independent brands in the local area is key to the Hipster Hamper ethos.
“Sixty-three percent of people want to shop independent. We’re providing the hampers of the future, and sourcing products from the immediate local area means that they don’t have to travel far. By 2022 we’ll be B.Corp certified and also completely plastic-free. Just one product out of the 45 in our line contains plastic.”
The support from Start Up Loans has been valuable to Sian’s journey with her growing business.
“My mentor Colin gave me so much confidence. Nobody in my family is in business, but Colin got it straight away and gave me a lot of encouragement when everything felt very daunting.”
The future looks bright for Hipster Hamper, with the offering constantly evolving as restrictions ease and further partnerships with Drop24 and Amazon to come this year.
