Who is Monks & Co Clothing?
Amy Barker established her menswear clothing business, Monks & Co Clothing in 2012. Monks & Co Clothing has a flagship store in West Malling and an online store selling rare and unique menswear brands. She prides her business on excellent and personalised customer service.
Monks & Co Clothing‘s Story
Amy had experience in the fashion industry and retail to achieve success. She’d been working long hours for other people when she realised she should be working for herself instead.
“I felt like if I was working that hard, I would rather be working that hard for myself – that’s what really pushed me.”
Like any great start up business, Amy put market research at the centre of the business plan. After getting great feedback from her target audience, Amy needed funding to set up Monks & Co. A Start Up Loan helped her invest in stock, develop her online store and gain access to a free business mentor.
“The banks had turned us down, saying we are not investing in retail locations… whereas the Start Up Loans company it wasn’t even an issue.”
In Monks & Co Clothing’s first year they were awarded the Best New Business at the Drapers Awards.
Why did we choose Monks & Co Clothing as an ambassador?
Amy’s drive to succeed is an inspiration to any aspiring business owners. Monks & Co Clothing is showing that there local high streets can still be a place where local businesses are successful, so long as they have a driven and enterprising founder.
“Ultimately you need that passion and that enthusiasm.”
Why did Monks & Co Clothing choose a Start Up Loan?
Like so many of the businesses we’ve backed, despite having a brilliant idea and experience in a relevant industry Amy could not find funding from traditional finance providers. Put simply, the banks were not lending.
A Start Up Loan was the perfect fit, offering funding and a mentor to help Amy do what she knew she could do, build a successful menswear retail store.
